Wednesday June 20th
(From Fairbanks to Talkeetna)
We got the word early. Andy and Angie are off the
mountain. So plan "B" had us flying to Talkeetna without them.
Wrangell Mountain Air picked them up by bush plane and flew them to McCarthy. They
then took the Mail Plane (previously reserved under Plan "B") from McCarthy to Anchorage, rented a
car and drove to The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where we are staying. They
got about 10 miles from here but then the road closed due to an accident.
The 2 1/2 hour drive unfortunately took them 5 1/2 hours. But they're
here - - - tired - - - but here.
We flew from Fairbanks to Talkeetna, flying just over the road at about 1,200 feet,
instead of over the mountains. It was quite a site (first and second pix).
(Please note - flying south and to the east of Mt. McKinley, the mountain was on our right,
however I made a 180 degree turn to take the picture. We couldn't take any
picture out the front since that window was covered with bugs. We
weren't up high with the Jets, we were down low, with the Bugs.
The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is quite a place. The view from our window
(third pix) was spectacular.
Tomorrow we are taking a ski plane to land on either a glacier or the base
camp of Mt. McKinley, which is at about 7,000 feet.
